With a work flight booked for Maine, I tucked in a 6 wt switch rod, a box of flies, my flats boots and my stripping basket. Just in case.
I made a call to Steve at 12wt located in Portland and we made arrangements for me to stop by and say hello. It's kind of a long story but it was due in large part to some information that Steve gave me back a number of years ago that put me on my first striper. Since then I've typically given him a call when I make it out to Maine and he does I nice job of given me intel on the stripers. It just so happens that Steve also runs a fly fishing clothing company that specializes in sun protection. Partly in exchange for the good karma that he has passed along to me and partly because I need sun protection from time to time, I've bought a few items from 12wt and I gotta tell you, it' some good gear. All that aside, I've talked to him on the phone, emailed him, exchanged text messages but I'd never actually met him. So I stopped and he was kind enough to stay late and let me in. It was good to finally put a face to the man. He gave me the tour and showed me what they were working on for the 2015 line and it looks like they are going to continue to do good things. I filled a shopping bag with a couple items that I wanted, bid him farewell and headed out to the falling tide.
I'd like to say that I stepped into a blitz and line burned my fingers with hard pulling stripers....But that didn't happen. What happened is that I worked out the kinks in my switch rod casting, followed the tide as it receded and then stood in the dark Atlantic, wet wading, wishing I'd brought waders. The sun dipped low, I trudged the soggy sand past the skeleton ribs of an old wooden ship, peeled off my wet clothes in the dark parking lot and turned my car north for the next days work.
Sometimes just getting time on the water has to be enough.

Things that are good...
I have spent the last two nights thinking about things that are good.
Here is a partial list.
Things that are good:
Flying with fly rods
4 Piece Rods
Getting to airport security early enough to show off your pliers and reels
Window seats
The ability to sleep on any flight to anywhere
Rental car upgrades (at no charge)
Waders over work clothes
Empty beaches
October
Clean and Cheap Mom & Pop Hotels (Near Water)
The right pillow
Falling Tides
Indian Summers
Having (getting) to rinse saltwater off your gear
Beach towns in the "off season"
Reliable local information
Reel squawk (cast)
Reel squawk (fish)
Swinging flies for stripers
Fishing Scandi heads in the Atlantic
Flushing tidal creeks
Stripers...(even small ones)
Samuel Adams Boston Lager
$6.99 large pepperoni pizza at a good pizza joint
Yes sir, all good things.

Atlantic Relief
A work trip to Maine. Clean, clear Atlantic water and evening dropping
tides on one of my favorite beaches. I was able to schedule work (3
days in a row) around fishing for stripers and...blues. I have caught
some very, very small blues on Martha's Vineyard a few years back, but
this trip I finally discovered why these fish are revered by some and
despised by others. Let's just say that I lost a few flies to these
toothy bastards. I also caught one that was probably in the 4-6 pound
class but failed to get a pic after I was trying to dance around the
teeth and it finally cut my line and swam off with another fly. Sand
eel patterns were the fly of the trip and now, after the run in with the
blues, I need to tie more. My last of the three nights fishing the
beach, after I caught a couple small stripers, I got hit and broken
off by something that left a surface disturbance similar to a
Manatee...not being in Florida I can only assume that it was something
else...
I guess I'll have to go back and see if I can figure out what it was.

MA
I met up with the Wednesday night crew from the Bear's Den tonight. We hit a new (to me) part of MA and wailed on schoolies...
The No-see-ums were incredible...cast, strip, strip (wipe the bugs off your face and hands) strip, strip (wipe the bugs off your face and hands)...
The schoolies were targeting sand eels on the flush from a tidal creek. I lost count of the number I hooked and landed.
An excellent time, bugs be damned.

RI
Stopped by a striper spot in Rhode Island after work today.
Tide was low, the weeds were everywhere.
The fish were not.

Mung
Out in MA hoping for some stripers...hit the beach and the mung was everywhere. I don't know who first named this seaweed "mung" but it fits. It mungs up the fishing. I settled for a beach, rental car, rod, stripping basket and lighthouse photo. Damn.
